Teaching a child to read and write opens the door to worlds beyond imagination. It not only develops academic skills, but also deepens their understanding of culture, identity, and history. In classrooms across Guatemala, the Global Learning Exchange Initiative (GLXi) is making this transformation possible.

During Holy Week in Guatemala, the rhythms of daily life slow down as children spend more time at home, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and scents of deep tradition. 

One of the greatest challenges for teachers in public school classrooms, particularly in elementary school, is finding materials and resources that support all students, regardless of skill or ability. That’s where GLXi comes in.

Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, GLXi staff delivered physical libraries — each with at least 85 books — to 52 dedicated teachers across Guatemala. 

For the second year in a row, teachers trained through the Global Learning Exchange Initiative (GLXi)’s Open Books, Open Minds (OBOM) program participated in an evaluation to assess the program’s impact. 

For 2025, we received a record number of teacher training applications. We responded by admitting more teachers than ever before!

Today, Global Learning Exchange Initiative (GLXiⓇ) pays special tribute to an exceptional teacher whose legacy will remain in the memory and hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him: Third-grade teacher Julio Eduardo Díaz Figueroa.

The 2025 school year presents an opportunity for GLXi to innovate, grow, and face challenges with determination and creativity.

Continuous training not only strengthens teachers’ skills but also enables them to innovate, adapt, and better respond to their students' needs. That is why it is a central tenet of GLXi’s mission in Guatemala.
