JAIME VIELMAN – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Jaime Vielman is a Guatemalan professional with 18 years of experience in finance, strategic planning, human resources, and education management. He holds a degree in Public Accounting and Auditing from Mariano Gálvez University and currently serves as the Executive Director of Global Learning Exchange Initiative (GLXi) in Guatemala. In this role, he leads efforts to improve literacy and strengthen teacher development in public schools, working to expand educational opportunities and reduce illiteracy and school dropout rates.

Before joining GLXi in 2019, Jaime built extensive experience in finance and organizational leadership. He worked as Budget Manager at the Municipality of Jocotenango, overseeing financial planning and supplier management. Later, at De la Gente, he served as Financial Coordinator and was later promoted to Financial Director, where he managed project finances, optimized internal processes, and collaborated with accountants in Guatemala and the U.S.

In addition to his work in finance and education, Jaime is also an entrepreneur. In 2018, he co-founded Canela Antigua, serving as Managing Partner until 2021. In this role, he gained expertise in business strategy, budget control, and operations management.

With a strong background in financial leadership, business strategy, operations, and project management, combined with a deep passion for education, Jaime continues to drive GLXi’s mission to improve literacy and expand learning opportunities for Guatemalan children.


DR. JUAN FERNANDO PORRES – DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION — GUATEMALA

Juan Fernando Porres is a Guatemalan educator with over 18 years of experience in teaching, psychology, and academic leadership. Passionate about education and lifelong learning, he has dedicated his career to developing innovative teaching strategies and fostering meaningful learning experiences.

He holds a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis on Pedagogical Mediation, along with master’s degrees in Values Education and Civic Training and Higher Education. He earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, where he completed his clinical training and worked as a teaching assistant.

Throughout his career, Juan Fernando has worked in administration, education, and academic research. He has held leadership roles as Head of Human Resources, University Academic Coordinator, and Institutional Advisor, in addition to serving as a teacher, school counselor, and educational psychologist. He also shares his expertise as a university professor and writer, continuously contributing to the academic field.

Writing is one of his greatest passions, encompassing poetry, academic texts, and books on personal growth. Some of his most recent works include Creciendo desde adentro: la magia de la madurez, La ¿? te brinda sentido, Antropogen-éticas, Estoy listo para tu voz, and Quitapenas, which is currently under review.

As Educational Director at GLXi in Guatemala, Juan Fernando leads the Open Books, Open Minds teacher training program, equipping educators with pedagogical and psychological tools to support children's learning. His work emphasizes school readiness, resource optimization, and effective lesson planning, integrating guided reading and writing to foster student independence and academic growth.


ANDREA TUMAX – PSYCHOPEDAGOGICAL INTERVENTION AND EVALUATION COORDINATOR — GUATEMALA

Andrea Tumax is an education and psychopedagogy professional with over 10 years of experience supporting children with disabilities, learning challenges, and special educational needs. She holds a degree in Psychopedagogy, with specialized training in neurocognitive diversity education, curricular adaptations, and inclusive education strategies. Additionally, she has specialized in social and collaborative economy from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala and neurorehabilitation in Argentina. Her international training in Mexico, Spain, Chile, and Argentina has given her a broad and multicultural perspective on education.

Andrea has worked as a university professor, advisor, and consultant for educational institutions and organizations focused on inclusive education. She has also been a speaker at national and international events, addressing topics related to learning, psychopedagogical intervention, and educational inclusion. As a specialist in the detection, evaluation, and intervention of learning disorders, she designs personalized strategies to improve academic performance and has led programs integrating therapeutic and educational support for children and youth with disabilities.

At GLXi, Andrea leads the Psychopedagogical Intervention and Evaluation Program, overseeing student progress assessments, program impact measurement, and reading performance analysis. She also directs Open Books In Action (Mentes Abiertas en Acción), providing guidance and training to teachers implementing the Open Books, Open Minds (Libros Abiertos, Mentes Abiertas) program, particularly those working with students facing literacy challenges. Through monthly teacher training workshops, she strengthens educators’ skills, helps address classroom challenges, and ensures inclusive teaching practices that improve students’ academic performance.

Her work plays a crucial role in expanding access to quality education in Guatemala, ensuring that children with diverse learning needs receive the support they need to thrive.


PAMELA OLIVA MÉNDEZ – DEVELOPMENT MANAGER — GUATEMALA

Pamela Oliva is a communications and partner development specialist with experience helping nonprofit organizations improve education, healthcare, and career opportunities for disadvantaged communities in Guatemala. She holds a bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences from Rafael Landívar University (Guatemala City) and a certification in Behavioral Change for Latin American Communities from the National Institute of Public Health (Mexico City).

Pamela has organized fundraising events for more than 1,500 companies, individual donors, and volunteers, uniting them under a common cause. She began her career in the nonprofit sector as a certified medical interpreter for mission trips across Guatemala. Her leadership skills quickly led to a promotion, where she managed logistics for donor trips and fundraising events for three organizations simultaneously. This experience allowed her to develop a deep understanding of her country and the processes involved in implementing development strategies for families and communities with diverse needs, positioning her as a bridge between them and opportunities to break cycles of poverty.

In her role as Development Manager at GLXi, Pamela directs fundraising, grant management, donor relations, and communications, working closely with the Guatemalan team to expand educational programs and secure resources to advance literacy efforts throughout Guatemala.


ADRIANA SÁNCHEZ – DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR AND STRATEGIC SUPPORT — GUATEMALA

Adriana Sánchez is a communications and development professional with 12 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, specializing in health, nutrition, and education. She has worked with various NGOs and international organizations, focusing on strategic communications, fundraising, and project development.

She holds a degree in Nutrition from Francisco Marroquín University (Guatemala) and is fluent in Spanish and English, allowing her to collaborate on global initiatives. Her expertise includes communication strategies, social media management, and content creation to drive awareness and donor engagement.

Adriana has led key projects with UNICEF, Cultiva International, and Maya Health Alliance, focusing on community health, nutrition, and education. She has also supported grassroots initiatives to improve literacy in marginalized communities.

As Development Coordinator and Strategic Support at GLXi, she plays a key role in strengthening partnerships and advancing development strategies to expand educational opportunities in Guatemala.

Literacy Advisory Board
