Annual Appeal
Imagine a preschool classroom in Guatemala with up to 40 students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Many Indigenous children grow up speaking Mayan languages, yet their education is conducted in Spanish.
This language gap creates a significant obstacle to learning, especially for children already facing poverty—where 55% of the population lives below the poverty line.
These are the circumstances that GLXi teacher Glenda González de Peláez navigates daily in Pachipac Hamlet, Baja Verapaz. Like many Guatemalan teachers, Glenda faces challenges in addressing language barriers and helping students with varying readiness levels. One of her students,
Emily, did not speak at all at the beginning of the year. She only communicated via gestures. With patience and GLXi’s continuous support, Emily has begun to whisper a few words, which is a remarkable step forward.
“Seeing her smile and make efforts to communicate fills me with great satisfaction,” Glenda says.
GLXi has trained 217 teachers over the last 10 years.
GLXI’s programs have impacted more than 20,000 children in Guatemala.

Luis’ Story
Another one of Glenda’s students, Luis, is a 5-year-old boy with hyperactivity and focus issues. In his first weeks in the classroom, he faced significant challenges.
Glenda was concerned about his readiness for first grade. However, with the support of GLXi’s Open Books, Open Minds program, she implemented targeted activities to assist him.
Today, he can recognize and write vowels, a remarkable achievement. His progress is a testament to the resilience of these children and “fills me with pride,” Glenda shared. This progress, made possible by your support, is a beacon of hope for the future of these children.
