In Memory of GLXi Teacher Julio Eduardo Díaz Figueroa

A good teacher leaves a mark that can never be erased.

Each month, Global Learning Exchange Initiative (GLXiⓇ) recognizes one of its participating teachers for their contributions to our literacy efforts in Guatemala. This month, we wanted to pay special tribute to an exceptional teacher whose legacy will remain in the memory and hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him: Third-grade teacher Julio Eduardo Díaz Figueroa.

For over 26 years, Mr. Díaz dedicated his life to education at the Escuela Oficial Urbana Mixta "La Brigada," leaving much more than knowledge in every classroom.

He instilled values, awakened dreams, and nurtured a love for learning in countless students. His dedication and passion for education went beyond books and daily lessons — he was an inspiration to students and teachers alike.

But his work was not limited to the classroom.

His love for education led him to participate in GLXi’s "Open Books, Open Minds” program. As part of that, he wrote "The Journey of the Caterpillar," a book that reflects his deep commitment to children and his desire to guide each student on their journey of growth and discovery.

With his book, Mr. Díaz not only revealed his writing skills but also his caring soul, offering a message of hope, effort, and transformation.

A Teacher, a Mentor, a Friend

More than an educator, Mr. Díaz was a mentor and a friend to his students. His warmth, patience, and unique teaching style made every child in his classroom feel valued and motivated to grow.

His words of encouragement, sincere smile, and example of dedication left a lasting impact on many, who remember him today with gratitude and admiration.

His legacy was not only built through teaching but also through his passion for knowledge.

Trained as a primary school teacher, he continued his studies in archaeology at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, and later completed his coursework in the law and notary program.

Mr. Díaz’s desire to learn and keep growing serves as a testament to perseverance and a deep love for knowledge.

A Legacy That Lasts Forever

Sadly, Mr. Díaz passed away in August from Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, along with his mother, Lidia Figueroa de Díaz. He was 55.

In Guatemala, Dengue cases increased 524% last year, with 53,000 positive cases and 61 deaths, causing the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance in Guatemala to declare a National Health Emergency.

We were deeply saddened to lose one of our own to this epidemic.

Today, former students, colleagues, friends, family, and the entire GLXi Guatemala team come together to pay tribute to a man who made education his life’s mission. His spirit lives on in every lesson he shared, every story he told, and every student who had the honor of learning from him.

Mr. Díaz: your light has not faded. Your legacy continues to shine in every child inspired by your words, in every teacher who follows your example, and in every book that holds your essence.

Thank you for your dedication, for your unconditional love for teaching, and for devoting your life to transforming the future through education.

Your mark will never be erased.

In memory of Julio Eduardo Díaz Figueroa.
