Thank You for Supporting GLXi on GiveSTL Day!

Last Thursday, we watched as our community members stepped up to the plate and helped turn #GiveSTLDay into a great success for GLXi and the children and classrooms of Guatemala. We raised close to $1,000, which is a significant increase from last year, and will go a LONG way in helping the committed teachers and students who participate in our program!

We wanted you to know how grateful we are for your ongoing support, and we wanted to share a little more about how these types of contributions help GLXi in its mission.

First, let’s talk about our mission and what we know about children and how they learn.

We believe a curious child has the power to change the world.

We know if kids do not “Learn to Read” by the third grade, then they may never be able to “Read to Learn,” which is a life-long transformative skill.

Our mission is to empower elementary school children in Guatemala by providing access to an unparalleled literacy curriculum and professional teacher training that creates new opportunity pathways for the next generation.

Solving a Literacy Problem

Of course, it’s not as easy as just snapping our fingers or willing this to happen.

Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America, and more than half of its population lives in poverty. One third of that population is ages 14 and younger. And one in four children under age 15 are illiterate.

Most teachers in Guatemala have a high school degree with no additional teacher training or literacy instruction, and lack a support system and grade-level appropriate resources.

So it takes more than just a big dream and dedicated people on board with our mission. It takes contributions like yours to give these teachers, students and classrooms the tools, support and resources that they need.

How Your Donations Help

We are a nonprofit supported by those who believe we can change lives by investing in teacher training and early literacy education.

Our proprietary curriculum, “Open Books. Open Minds” — with its high-quality classroom materials and professional development for teachers — is designed to increase elementary school children’s potential for completing their education and achieving future success.

We do this by focusing our literacy efforts on that target age group that we talked about earlier: elementary school children in grades 1 to 3.

We give teachers what they need to implement the program, support them along the way, and watch as these children flourish through literacy and learning.

Your donations go directly toward this work:

$5                 Supports classroom supplies for one child

$25               Supports Classroom supplies for five children

$50               Supports a tablet for classroom digital-book reading

$100             Underwrites classroom physical book library

$325             Supports up to 85 high-quality books for a classroom

$500             Underwrites a Literacy Kit, Chromebook and projector

$1,000          Underwrites teacher training

These are the tangible results of your contributions. But the way we see it, your support of GLXi is a dollar invested in the future of not just one child or teacher, but to the latent potential of an entire country.

That’s why we were so humbled by your support on #GiveSTLDay.

We know there were so many worthwhile organizations looking for donations on that day; we are both honored and grateful that you chose GLXi. Your ongoing support means so much to us, and it makes a true difference in these classrooms.

Whether it’s through giving events like #GiveSTLDay, or direct donations that come in through our website, we can’t thank you enough for how you have pitched in.

If you’d still like to donate to GLXi, we do accept donations year-round. We welcome your donations at any time.
