Photos from GLXi® Classrooms: Celebrating International Book Day
International Book Day took place on April 23, and we couldn't let it pass by without sharing some photos from one of our participating classrooms!
Many thanks to GLXi teacher Rosalio Socorec Con from the Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta Centro América, Santa María Cauqué, who shared highlights from the special book day activities she led with her third-grade students in the afternoon session.
World Book Day is a global celebration that promotes reading and written culture for all ages. In Guatemala, this celebration can have a significant impact on public schools by fostering the habit of reading and promoting access to education for children.
Through activities such as read-aloud sessions, literary contests, and visits to libraries or learning corners, schools can inspire students to explore new worlds through literature.
Celebrating World Book Day in public schools in Guatemala helps cultivate a love for reading from an early age, which can have positive effects on students' academic and personal development. Additionally, promoting reading can help combat illiteracy and contribute to the formation of critical and engaged citizens within their communities.
GLXi teachers foster a love for reading in their classrooms by encouraging daily reading and implementing the Open Books, Open Minds methodology – using learning corners and other tools to promote literacy.
However, it is important to address the challenges faced by many public schools in Guatemala, such as a lack of resources and limited infrastructure. For the impact of World Book Day to be more significant, additional efforts are needed to improve school libraries, train teachers in reading promotion strategies, and ensure equitable access to quality books for all students.
An increase in donations can help bring additional special initiatives during World Book Day, such as writing contests, reading festivals, and community outreach activities that involve parents, children, and members of the community at large.
By investing in teacher training and access to educational resources, we will be building a brighter and more promising future for future generations!
