Honoring Those Who Inspire: Celebrating Teacher Day in Guatemala

Every year on June 25, Guatemala celebrates Teacher Day to recognize the essential role educators play in shaping future generations.

Across the country, schools come alive with student performances, handmade gifts, and heartfelt messages that reflect deep respect for teachers’ dedication.

At Global Learning Exchange Initiative (GLXi), we joined this national celebration by turning June into “Teacher Month.”

Throughout the month, we shared powerful stories of educators who are transforming learning in their classrooms through our training and resources.

On social media, in newsletters, and through community outreach, we amplified their voices, celebrating their daily commitment to guiding and inspiring students.

We used Teacher Day itself as the culmination of this campaign, inviting our supporters to take meaningful action: sponsoring teachers, spreading the word, or sending messages of encouragement.

In our partner schools, teachers felt this recognition deeply, receiving heartfelt support not only from students and local communities but also from the wider GLXi network.

Growing Our Impact Together

The GLXi Teacher Month campaign did more than raise awareness: it brought in new monthly sponsors and followers who are now helping sustain our ongoing support for teachers in Guatemala.

Thanks to this generosity, we’re expanding our reach: providing more educators in rural and under-served areas with classroom libraries, printed reading materials, and essential teaching supplies.

These contributions also support our commitment to continuous professional development. Each month, certified teachers participate in workshops on literacy instruction, inclusive practices, and classroom management. This steady investment helps ensure they stay motivated, well-equipped, and confident as they guide their students forward.

While we’re deeply grateful for the support so far, there’s still more to do. Classroom needs continue to grow, and we haven’t yet covered the full costs for the year. The campaign remains open, and we warmly invite others to join us in sponsoring teachers and helping bring quality education to even more communities across Guatemala.

A Ripple Effect Across Communities

Since its inception, GLXi has trained over 500 primary school teachers through our flagship program, Open Books, Open Minds (OBOM)

This rigorous, research-based professional development equips educators to teach reading and writing effectively, even in the most resource-constrained settings.

The ripple effect of this training is profound: together, these GLXi-trained teachers have reached thousands of students, many of whom are the first in their families to have access to books and structured reading programs.

Beyond the classroom, these educators become true literacy champions, mentoring peers, sharing strategies, and advocating for a culture of reading in their communities.

Each trained teacher isn’t just a single success story: they’re a long-term investment in the future of Guatemalan education, lighting the way for countless young readers to discover the power of words.
