GLXi Delivers Much-Needed Supplies to Guatemala Schools

These are the school supplies GLXi donated to each student.

Pencils, glue, paper and crayons. Simple supplies that most of us likely have laying around the house.

But for students in 20 Guatemala schools, access to these basic supplies means an opportunity to learn.

This spring, your support helped Global Learning Exchange Initiative (GLXi) provide much-needed school supplies like these to teachers in 20 schools.

School supplies donated to each GLXi-certified teacher.

Each GLXi-certified teacher received whiteboards, lined notebooks, blank notecards, whiteboard markers, whiteboard cleaner, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, scissors, crayons, glue, ink for refilling markers, palettes, construction paper, and a planner.

For the students and teachers who received the supply boxes, it was an emotional experience. Things like pencils and paper are not always adequately supplied in classrooms, which often means students are asked to share or make do with what they have.

Teachers do their best to find ways to give all the children the same opportunities, from using recycled materials to asking parents - who often cannot afford to help. Support from the Ministry of Education is not always consistent.

That’s why the supplies from GLXi are so vital.

Students offer their thanks for the school supplies.

But even with these supplies, there are still shortages in some classrooms, compounded by an ever-changing enrollment.

“There are times when the materials are not enough,” said Jaime Vielman, GLXi Executive Director – Guatemala. “GLXi certified teachers manage the resources with the intention of supporting the teaching process; that is why they seek ways in which assigned students can share and take care of the resources, so they can last and serve effectively.”

A child with materials gets excited about learning, while a child without  becomes discouraged and eventually, disinterested in the classroom.

GLXi is dedicated to ensuring that all children have the same opportunities.

That’s why we support teacher training and provide our certified teachers with the educational materials needed to support learning.
